Planning is a key discipline to ensure equal opportunities for women and men in urban environments. Although a relevant amount of literature has been developed during the last decades, there is still a significant lack of criteria and tools on how the ideas and guidelines on gender mainstreaming can be transferred from theory to practice in the planning activity of cities. This paper presents the first results of a study that looks at the potential of visualizing and evaluating gender-related suitability in urban areas by using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). At this first stage, the main focus is on accessibility to basic services using the concept of ?infrastructures for daily life? introduced in the Scandinavian context from the 80s. This is done taking into account the public space network, as well as public transport provision in the case of the Metropolitan Area of Madrid. A multi-criteria evaluation framework is visualized in a number of maps and analyzed from the perspective of the conceptual framework. The analysis allows reflecting on the capacity of this approach and tools to facilitate and enhance discussion, participation and decision making at city level with the aim of achieving fairer urban areas for all. Keywords: Gender mainstreaming, Geographic Information Systems, Infrastructures for daily life, Accessibility, Madrid. | |
