Descripción
In Spain, as in many other European countries, many buildings constructed with timber are nowadays under rehabilitation processes. Due to wood shortages in Europe, important volumes of slow growth ?pitch pine? were imported from the United States of America (U.S.A) along the XIX century and until the first decade of the XX century with the peaks of the timber cuttings by the 1880s and 1890s. Although the timber was exported under many commercial names, the most important species were ?Longleaf pine? or ?Georgia pitch pine? (Pinus palustris). Previous tests showed the homogeneous and high quality of this timber. In a sample of 45 beams, the mean density value was 680 kg/m3, the mean global modulus of elasticity 13656 N/mm2 and the mean modulus of rupture 38 N/mm2. Applying simple classification criterion related to knots, slope of grain and boring insect attacks, ten beams were rejected. The mean density value obtained after classification was 685 kg/m3, the mean modulus of elasticity was 14.484 N/mm2 and the mean modulus of rupture was 29 N/mm2 [1]. On the other hand, in many cases, the maintenance of existing wooden structures needs to develop new reinforcement techniques, mainly related to the increase of their stiffness and strength. Different solutions as timber-concrete or timber to timber composite systems have been developed to improve the performance of timber structures. Different kinds of connections between materials have been evaluated during the last years [2-6].
