Measuring liquid-induced erosion using DEM-CFD methods has been studied in detail mainly in rough pipes. Some studies have made measurements of the erosion rate in open liquid-solid systems but there is less information about parameters that control the first drag of individual particles in these open systems. The reason is probably the difficulty to design reliable testing benches to calibrate the results. In this work we present preliminary results of incipient velocity obtained in open channel in laboratory. The experiment was designed to obtain a continuous flow with a slow and gradual increase in velocity. The bed was made with two rows of spheres placed in staggered position. The measured sphere was placed in the middle of the rows. Besides, a small dam was simulated upstream in order to get a higher vertical distance from the bed level and a better control of velocities. Thus, the critical flow velocity for 5 spheres of variable size was measured using Acoustic Doppler Velocimetry. | |
