Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón is one of the greatest masters of Spanish architecture. His extraordinary career is partly due to the efficiency of his design methods and construction techniques, which is especially patent in his cross-ribbed vaults. When going through the set of his vaults, the most outstanding aspect is their formal complexity. Nevertheless, a detailed study of them reveals that, behind those elaborate designs, are hidden some geometrical and building techniques which are rather limited and aim at simplifying and reducing the cost of the execution of the project. The present article is meant to highlight Rodrigo Gil's resources by analyzing one of his most famous vaults. The construction of a large-scale model showed interesting aspects related to the arrangement of centerings and scaffoldings during assembly. Keywords: cross-ribbed vault, diagonal rib, tierceron, formeret, bevel, boss stones, springings, centering. | |
