Descripción
In the last 420,000 years the CO2 average concentration in the atmosphere has fluctuated between 180 and 280 ppmv (parts per million by volume), but since the industrial revolution, the CO2 concentration has increased until 370 ppmv and it is expected to raise up to 750 ppmv by 2100 considering the present trend. To mitigate this, several solutions are considered such as: improvements in the energy conversion technologies, changing to cleaner systems, increasing the carbon fixation methods or capture and sequestration of CO2 in geological formation. The last option mentioned above is starting to be considered in the short term as a feasible alternative in order to decrease the CO2 atmospheric emissions from power plants and cement or steel industry, which represent 2/3 of the global emissions. The main aim of this study is to give a general view of the problems related to the climate change due to the increase of the green house gasses in the atmosphere, problem that has lead the governments to take several measures of mitigation, as the Kyoto¿s protocol. These measures consider a reduction of the emissions of green house gasses by means of short and long terms objectives. To carry out these objectives, several methods has been considered, such as reduction of the emissions, energy savings plans, clean sources of energy, and capture and sequestration of CO2, main issue of the study. In Spain, projects as Hycoal of Elcogás in Puertollano (Ciudad Real) represents a European initiative. Based on a pre-combustion capture in a IGCC (integrated gasification and combined cycle), produces 2,500 Nm3/h of H2 with 25,000 t/year of CO2 separated by means of absorption. Also in the region a new project of CO2 sequestration ALCO2 it is being assessed.
