Determination of methane oxidation in landfill fugitive emissions by 13 Isotope measurements.

An important fraction of the methane emitted from landfills is oxidized when it passes through the cover reaching aerobic conditions when it is near the surface. This oxidation process, considerably reduce the global warming effect of these emissions. In this process there is an increase in 13C/12C on methane due to the preference of the methanotrophic bacteria for 12C. This fractionation has been quantified in the laboratory using soil samples from several landfills, obtaining values between 1,014 and 1,026. These values were then used to calculate the oxidized fraction of methane in several gas samples taken from the surface of the landfills. The results show a great variability, with values between 0 and 70% of methane oxidized. Each value can be related with the specific characteristics of each sample, suggesting a consistent methodology that could be used to calculate the mean oxidation in the total surface of a landfill or in a specific area.
