Maximum efficiency of a standard single junction solar cell is given by the Shockley Queisser limit of around 33% (40.7% under concentrated light) By introducing an intermediate band (IB) this limit can be overcome because this additional band allows the absoption of photons with energies lower than the bandgap. The maximum limit for an intermediate band solar cell under concentrated light is 63.1%for a bandgap of 2.0eV. According to theoretical calculations In2S3 doped with vanadium is a promising candidate for such an intermediate band device due to its bandgap of around 2.1eV. Its intermediate band is half-filled and placed around 1.65eV above the valence band and 0.45eV below the conduction band. | |
