Abstract: The standard compositional approach to the sentence meaning claims that if two expressions have identical structure and pairwise synonymous constituents, then these expressions cannot have non-identical meaning (Szabó, 2007). The construction grammar rejects this approach and sees instances of compositionality in cases in which two different meanings for the same syntactic form are licensed by two different collections of form-meaning licensers, i.e., by two different collections of constructions (Kay, Michaelis 2012). In other words, such expressions are non-synonymous because they are made up of different language units (different constructions). In my talk, I will discuss a class of cases in which different interpretations of expressions with identical syntactic structures are accounted for in a different way. These expressions contain identical units, but their meanings are differently connected. A semantic glue, which brings together the meanings of words, is valency slot filling. I proceed from a broad concept of valency, which admits that not only verbs or nouns can take arguments, but also adverbs, adjectives, particles, prepositions and conjunctions. This implies that the range of syntactic positions arguments may take with respect to their predicate is very diverse. Of special interest are cases when the meaning corresponding to a valency slot of predicate L is not expressed by a separate word or a phrase, but by some other semantic element. In particular, it may constitute only a part of the lexical meaning of some word.
