The process of extended urbanization has bred a new way of life which embraces everything. This lack of border determines that the urban ecosystem can only be defined according to a gradient of urbanization: built intensity, communication network density, activity, mobility, articulation of the environmental and ecological impact. This research has delineated the functional urban area of Madrid through data of commuting. In total, its territory is equivalent to an 80km radius. Its analysis throughout the two decades under study reflects its main challenges. Firstly, intermunicipal coordination. In the analysed period, the process of extended urbanization has been stepped up. Whereas in the first decade 25% of new inhabitants decided to live more than 25Km from the functional urban centre, this proportion increased to 40% in the next one. It is therefore fundamental to have an intermunicipal territorial planning which must go further than pure competitive approaches. Secondly, urban inequality. In these two decades, the traditional socio-spatial segregation pattern of Madrid ?between north-western and south-eastern? has grown significantly. Thirdly, environmental sustainability. The developed mobility model is not helping to promote a clean city where air pollution is a real problem nowadays due to the widespread use of car. If there is no public alternative with comparable times of car to move around the city, there will be no structural change. This research showed that high density areas where public transport is more used are those where it takes more time to get to work. | |
