Many assistance systems alert the driver or provide information to improve traffic safety. In this sense, the warnings must be clear, unambiguous and should not generate additional distractions. These specifications are even more critical in complex environments that demand a high cognitive and attentional load for the driver. In this paper, a system based on V2V communications is considered to facilitate the merging maneuver in highways. This maneuver implies a complete perception of the environment and a high concentration, especially when the traffic is dense. Therefore, we analyze the parameters that must be taken into account to verify that the warning system is not a significant distraction for the driver. For this purpose, tests have been carried out in real scenarios with nonintrusive instrumentation that allows defining the changes registered in the driver?s gaze when the cognitive demand increases. | |
