In spite of much recent research, high uncertainty persists concerning how biochar influences soil microbial biomass and activity. By means of an agricultural field experiment under semiarid conditions, we investigated the effects of 20 t ha-1 yr-1 of biochar added alone or combined with mineral fertilizer, municipal solid waste compost, or sewage sludge on soil microbial biomass C content and soil basal respiration after three consecutive years of amendment. Compared to mineral fertilization and no amendment, the addition of biochar alone decreased soil microbial biomass C content. We also found that biochar, especially when combined with municipal solid waste compost and sewage sludge, increased soil basal respiration, which may be attributed to the stimulating effect of the added decomposing organic matter. | |
