Within the framework of the symmetry approach, there are two kinds of integrability. First a ?weak? integrability, that is based on the existence of an infinitude of symmetries of the equation. This kind of integrability can be characterised by the existence of a recursion operator for the equation, perhaps formal. Linearisable equations display this kind of weaker integrability. The second kind of integrability, or ?strong? integrability, is related to the existence of not only symmetries, but also nontrivial conservation laws. It can be characterised by the existence of a symplectic operator. Equations that are integrable by the inverse scattering method feature both the weak and strong kinds of integrability. | |
