Datos
Descripción
Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) is one of the approximately 20% of all known plant viruses that can be transmitted vertically from parents to offspring through the seeds. Indeed, the ability of CMV to be seed transmitted was reported early after the discovery of the virus. Since then, this mode of transmission has been described in a still increasing number of CMV host plant species, reflecting the ample host range of the virus. The table lists a wide range of weeds and cultivated plant species from phylogenetically distant botanical families, and it is likely incomplete given that seed transmission has not been tested in many CMV hosts. In the plant species tested, the efficiency of CMV seed transmission is highly variable, from 0.07% in zucchini (Cucurbita pepo) to 100% in some soybean (Glycine max) cultivars. In many cases, these values have been derived from visual inspection for symptom development in germinated plants, but CMV seed-transmitted infection can be asymptomatic. Thus, currently reported seed-transmission rates in some hosts may be underestimated. Regardless of its efficiency, CMV seed transmission has a high potential impact for virus epidemiology. CMV seed transmission provides the virus with a means for surviving in unfavorable conditions and spreading long distances, and it is a potent source of primary inoculum. Indeed, even very low seed-transmission rates may be sufficient to start virus epidemics. The importance of this mode of transmission has attracted the attention of plant virologists since the 1970s, resulting in a body of work studying the mechanisms and determinants of CMV seed transmission, as well as the agronomical and ecological consequences of seedborne CMV epidemics. This chapter summarizes this knowledge.
