One of the most studied types of fuel cells is the direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). These type of fuel cells are a suitable energy source for low power portable electronic devices as well as backup and light-duty traction applications. In fact, DMFC stack has been successfully used on board an unmanned aerial vehicle. In this work, low cost hybrid organic-inorganic membranes have been prepared via sol-gel chemistry and direct infiltration of a novel zirconia modified phosphosilicate gel (40SiO2-40P2O5-20ZrO2) within the sulfonated polystyrene blocks of sSEBS, in order to achieve an improvement in DMFC performance with respect to Nafion and pristine sSEBS by minimizing methanol crossover. | |
