Descripción
As a result of the evolution that the container ships have had over the last few years due to effect of economies of scale, loads and stresses have increased considerably, being necessary the increase of steel, and therefore of weight, to support these new stresses. Due to the particular general arrangement of container ships (open cross section), this type of vessel is very sensitive to the wave torque. To be able to support the wave torque, an exclusive of this type of vessel, known as upper wing torsional box, is placed on the transverse structure of the double hull, on port and starboard side, in contact with the main deck. The cut-outs, made in the torsion box for the passage of the longitudinal stiffeners, will have to be studied from an optimum point of view both in weight and in level of stresses, in term of fatigue life.
