Somehigh-speedraillinesgothroughdesertzoneswheresandparticlestransportedbywindsmayfoultrackballastlayers.Thisfoulingcanbetroublesomesinceitincreasesthestiffnessofthelayerandreducesitscapacitytoabsorbvibrationsfromtherollingstock.Wearestudyingthisphenomenonthroughbothlaboratoryandnumericalexperiments.Inthelaboratory,weperformedtwokindsofexperiments:9inchestriaxialtestsandphysicalmodellingintheCEDEXTrackBoxtestingfacility.Thelatterisaunique1:1modelofrailwaytracksection(ofdimensions21m×5m×4m)thathasbeenbuilttomodelhigh-speedraillines(withpassengerandfreighttrainspassingatvelocitiesofupto400km/h).Thelaboratoryexperimentsallowedustomeasurethechangeofstiffnesswiththefoulinglevel(representedthroughthevoidcontaminantindex,VCI).NumericalsimulationsarebeingperformedwiththeDiscreteElementMethod,reproducingdrainedtriaxialtestconditions.Duetotheconsiderabledifferentsizeofrailwayballastandsandgrains,weareusingidealizedpackingsofsphericalparticlestostudythisphenomenon.WearepayingparticularattentiontothesamplesizeeffectsandareregisteringtheevolutionofthestiffnesswiththefoulingleveluptohighvalueofVCI.Theresultsobtainedfromtheseidealizedsystemswillbecontrastedtothelaboratoryexperimentscarriedoutwithrealrailwayballastandsand. | |
