Abstract
Recent research is exposed on the role played by nonlinear conical waves in self-focusing, collapse and filamentation of femtosecond pulses in nonlinear Kerr and dissipative media. Nonlinear unbalanced Bessel beams, X-waves and Y-waves emerge from spatiotemporal instabilities of localized waves in nonlinear media, and lead to a reinterpretation of the spatiotemporal nonlinear dynamics of ultrashort pulses, including a non-solitary approach to filamentation.
