Datos
Descripción
Over the last decades, the development of an ¿artificial pancreas¿ has been a huge challenge on the application of biomedical and health care technologies to diabetes therapy, although this aim has not been achieved yet. Nowadays, the evolution of continuous glucose monitoring, insulin pumps technologies, distributed computing and communications technologies are creating a very promising situation in the next future. A research effort to be extensively improved by the integration of these new technologies and therapeutic procedures within a telemedicine system. The aim of this coordinated project is to develop and evaluate a "telemedical artificial pancreas" - a multi-access telemedicine system that integrates a continuous glucose monitoring system, an insulin pump, a personal assistant device and an intelligent closed-loop control algorithm- to improve the quality of diabetes care through the use of adequate emerging technologies in health care. This new telemedicine system will be evaluated in three clinical trials to demonstrate its clinical outcomes and benefits, assessing each of its new components (continuous sensor, personal assistant and algorithm) as well as the patient personal wireless network that integrates all subsystems. The project research team is comprised by the Grupo de Bioingeniería y Telemedicina of Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, a partner of the Cooperative Research Thematic Network "TELEMEDICINA" (G03/117) and the Servicio de Endocrinología y Nutrición of Hospital Sant Pau. The incorporation of this new network node and the joint experience of both research teams in the telecare and intelligent monitoring of diabetes will allow to enrich and boost the outcomes of the Thematic Network opening its application fields to the use of new telemedical technologies and instrumentation into the management and care of diabetes
