Of all the hydration products of construction materials, like cement, C-S-H gel it is the most important, since it is the responsible of mechanical behaviour. The surface area and pore volume determined by nitrogen adsorption and BET method is a very useful tool to study the evolution of C-S-H gel during hydration time. Two differentiated zones in the pore-size distribution of the C-S-H gel at ∼ 12nm and ∼ 3nm have different influence in the mechanical strength. The proportion of both zones depends on the age of hydration, the cured temperature and type of cement. The results showed quantitative correlations among microstructural features to two physical properties such as mechanical strength and hydration degree. What is useful for the prediction of performance and engineering of new construction materials, such as fly ash belite cement. | |
