Amundsenisen is a large glacier plateau, 80 km2 in area, in Southern Spitsbergen. Results of ground-based radio-echo sounding in 2004 and 2006 show that it occupies a large intermountain depression with ice volume 27.1 km3 and maximum thickness 631 m. The ice body consists mainly of temperate ice, which at some places, usually near nunataks and in upper part of outlet glaciers, is covered by cold ice layer up to 250 m thick, similar to polythermal glacier structure. Internal reflecting layers from depths up to 80 m and deeper were detected at many radar profiles. They can be related with discontinuities or water-impermeable horizons in snow-firn sequence. Flat bedrock reflections were recorded at four places in central part of the plateau and in the upper part of outlet Hogstebreen. The longest flat-bed section is up to 450 m. These flat-bed returns are similar to radar reflections from sub-ice lakes identified at many places of the Antarctic ice sheet. Relatively high bed reflection power of low variability on flat-bed sections might indicate on water bodies at ice/bedrock interface of unknown thickness. Calculations of hydraulic potential and regions of possible water supercooling also suggest the water body presence at bedrock. Further investigations are required to understand the nature of these reflections in detail. | |
