Remote loser beam delivery system, using either optical fibre or a guiding optical path, is gaining interest as an emerging technique for welding Zn-coated steel components in automotive industry. This paper addresses a major issue reported when targeting high quality loser welds of Zn-coated steels, generated by Zn low vaporization temperature and the related influence of its vapours with the laser welding keyhole dynamic phenomenon. Some preliminary results obtained for no-gap lop welding of two types of Zn-coated sheets by means of a galvanometric laser beam delivery system ore presented together with some of the difficulties met for obtaining qualitative joints. A Rofin-Sinar DC 035 CO2 slab loser with a maximum power of 3.5 kW delivered through a RWS 2.2 optical system has been used for Remote Loser Welding (RLW) of two automotive-typical materials, ZStE 260 Z and St 05 Z, of different thicknesses. Critical aspects of the weld, as penetration, seam width, and porosity hove been analysed Standard macroscopic and dimensional analysis methods were used for characterising the welds. | |
