ABSTRACT: This work analyzes the performance of six different secondary optical elements (SOE) as part of a concentrator system where the primary optical element (POE) is a Fresnel lens. In first place, Fresnel lens limitations are reviewed. Then, reflective (cone, pyramid) and refractive (pyramid, CPC and two kinds of dome) SOE are designed and optimized. Several figures of merit are obtained by ray-tracing simulations for each particular SOE: total effective concentration, angular transmission curve, annual energy lost, irradiance distribution and predominant angle of incidence over the cell. The reflective SOE (inverted cone and pyramid) show the best optical efficiencies (89% and 88% respectively), while the CPC design allows the widest acceptance angle (±1.4º). | |
