Descripción
The MARCELINO BOTIN FOUNDATION has created a WATER OBSERVATORY as part of its well established Trends Analysis Observatory. The Water Observatory is located at the Complutense University, in Madrid (UCM), who signed an agreement with the Marcelino Botin Foundation in September 2008 for a four year period. This WATER OBSERVATORY represents the creation of an interdisciplinary think tank to address global water issues. The Director of this think tank is Professor Llamas, Emeritus Professor at the UCM and a member of the Spanish Royal Academy of Sciences. The Observatory¿s Deputy Director is Prof Alberto Garrido, from the Agricultural Economics Department at the Polytechnic University of Madrid. The think tank also includes full time Dr Elena Lopez-Gunn, from the London School of Economics, an expert on water governance and institutional analysis. The think tank also has the collaboration of Dra Maite Martinez Aldaya, an ecologist and expert in economic and ecological water footprint analysis. Dr M. Aldaya is currently working at the University of Twente (Holland). This WATER OBSERVATORY has its history in a series of research projects undertaken by the MARCELINO BOTIN FOUNDATION under the direction of Professor Ramon Llamas over the last 10 years. These activities have resulted in the publication of more than 10 books and 20 working papers. The last book WATER AND ETHICS published by Taylor and Francis will be presented at a side event during the 5th WORLD WATER FORUM at Istanbul. At the 5th World Water Forum the four members of the Observatory will present their research and lead two additional side events on the Water Footprint and the Silent Revolution of Intensive Groundwater Use. Next September, the Water Observatory will host in Santander the 4th BOTIN FOUNDATION WATER WORKSHOP, which will gather twenty world experts to discuss and debate on the topic RE-THINKING WATER AND FOOD SECURITY.
