In this paper, the numerical approximation of the one-dimensional transport equation by means of ¯nite-di®erence schemes is discussed. Special attention is paid to the crucial concept of numerical stability, which can be clearly analyzed for this equation. It will be shown, through a series of basic but meaningful examples, how stability a®ects the quali- ty of the numerical approximations. The procedures here described serve as basis for the deep understanding of numerical approaches to other more complex physical phenomena. | |
