This paper presents an experimental assessment of the constant false alarm rate (CFAR) behavior of several coherent detectors in the presence of high resolution sea clutter. The results clearly show a strong influence of the number of reference cells used to estimate the covariance matrix in the displacement from the nominal probability of false alarm. A variation of up to one order of magnitude has been observed, and therefore the practical applicability of the detectors is compromised. | |
