In this paper a parametric study of the dependence of the rain characteristics in wind turbine clutter (WTC) mitigation for C-band weather radars is presented. For this aim, several realistic simulations of weather conditions have been performed. These simulations are based in both the type and the intensity of the precipitation, and so, they include reflectivity, velocity and spectral width parameters. Wind farm installations relatively near to radar systems cause clutter returns which can affect the normal operation of these radars. In particular, wind farms disturb the performance of C-band weather radars in two main facts: First, they provoke the overestimation of rain reflectivity due to the large radar cross section that wind turbines have. Second, they cause the misleading of the wind velocity estimation because of the rapid rotation movement of blades, which produce very wide or ambiguous Doppler returns. | |
