There is a growing demand for sustainable energy. Bioenergy is one of several alternatives that can serve to help solving questions related to both development and sustainability. Although the potentials appear to be considerable, there is confusion on specific aspects for bioenergy production. These are mainly related to (i) the production potential under real world conditions in both developed and developing countries, (ii) energy efficiency of bioenergy production and consumption chains; (iii) contribution to reduction of greenhouse gasses (GHG), (iv) effect on nature and biodiversity. Another issue, with an overwhelming importance relates to the way production of bioenergy crops will lead to competition for land, inputs and, eventually, food. Although there is much debate on these issues, detailed, quantified scientific data related to potential and actual production of bioenergy crops are scarce. While it is expected that such information will shortly become available, it is of eminent importance to reflect on the way data should be collected, analyzed and compared. | |
