Paper pulp manufacturing separates cellulose fibres using both, mechanical and chemical process and generates important amount of waste materials. In recent years, an increasing proportion of recycled fibres are used in paper industries due to their important environmental and economical benefits. A ton of pulp produced from recycled paper requires 60% less energy to manufacture than a ton of bleached virgin kraft pulp1. However, paper recycling results in the production of large amounts of de-inking paper sludge (DPS) composed by removed inks, clay fillers, coating of used paper, chemical additives and some cellulose fibres. In Spain, more than 200.000t of DPS were produced during 2006. Due to their high organic matter content, DPS can be used as component of substrates2 or as amendment to improve or restore soil fertility and biological functioning3,4. Nevertheless, it is necessary to add a supplemental N due to the high ratio C/N of DPS. One of these sources could be sewage sludges (SL). The objective of this work is to study the influence of the addition of a mixture of DPS and SL (1:1 weight) at different rates (2%, 4% and 8%) in two soils with different pH, texture and organic matter content. For this reason, an incubation experiment was performed during 60 days. Final samples were analysed by FTIR, Hg porosimetry and Thermal analysis (TG, dTG and DTA). Results shown that soil respiratory activity, Total Mineralization Coefficient (CMT),Total organic carbon (TOC) and porosimetry of samples increased with the increment of the rates. However, The highest rates, the lowest is the Humification index (HI).This fact was corroborated by FTIR and thermal analysis results. | |
