The Spanish law Real Decreto 1469/2007 about the regulations of quality of Iberian pig meat, establishes limitations to the carrying capacity of Iberian pig in the dehesa (open oak parkland) and forces to the regional governments to make a programs of survey of acorn production at the beginning of each campaign, that will have to be based on agronomical, environmental, and topographical criteria, identifying each paddocks through SIGPAC. The Model Dehesa is software for the daily calculation of pasture and evergreen oak biomass, which is based on the characteristics of the forest, the type of soil and the meteorological factors of the modelled area. Objective was to identify potential carrying capacity of fatted Iberian pigs. A simulation model has been used to determine Iberian pig and dry cows stoking rate in Extremadura. Model runs with daily weather data from Extremadura Station Network from 2000 to 2005, soil from Extremadura soil data base, and tree cover from the Third National Forest Survey. A data base was build for each input and visualized using ArcGis. All simulated pasture average yield was 2522 kg ha-1 and the acorns production was 220 kg ha-1. The model estimates that optimal stocking rate ranges from 0.2 to 0.8 Iberian pigs and average of 0.4 pigs per hectare of dehesa, and from 0.1 to 0.9 dry cows ha-1 and on average of 0.59 cows ha-1. Total production of 399,054 fatted pig per year and grazing of 584,614 equivalent dry cows over a 985,275 hectares. | |
