Descripción
Collaborative Project, 7º PM, (Socio-economic Sciences and Humanities). ¿Prospective analysis for the Mediterranean Region¿¿, (MEDPRO, www.medpro-foresight.eu ) is a three-year FP 7 project that explores the challenges the countries in the South Mediterranean region, from Morocco to Turkey, will have to cope with in the next decades. The countries in the Mediterranean (MED11) region will have to cope with significant challenges: economic reforms, trade liberalization, financial markets modernization, upgrading infrastructure, more prudent management of natural resources (economically and environmentally), fighting poverty and inequality, eradication of illiteracy, overhaul of education system and securing equal access of boys and girls to education, elimination of other forms of female discrimination, reform of labour markets aiming at diminishing chronic unemployment, improving access to water and sanitation, coping with climate warming mitigation and adaptation, further improvement of health standards and many other policy targets. On the institutional and political front the task is to build a democratic and secular state of rule of law and respect to civil rights and freedoms, which will not contradict the dominant cultural and religious tradition in the region. Turkey, also covered by MEDPRO, faces the additional challenges of making progress in the negotiations concerning EU membership and of implementing the customs union with the EU.
