This paper describes the works carried out for the assessment and refurbishment of an ancient timber structure consisting of large trusses. Visual grading and nondestructive techniques have been applied to improve the estimation of the mechanical properties of the timber: wave velocity of sound propagation to estimate the modulus of elasticity and the bending strength, and penetration depth and screw withdrawal resistance to estimate the density. The structural analysis confirms an overstress and the failure generalized in the joint between tie and rafter, combined with serious rot. The reinforcement of this joint was made using steel bars and epoxy resins. The reconstruction of the damaged pieces was carried out with epoxy resins mortars. The reinforcement of rafters was completed using a laminated veneer lumber piece connected to the upper face of the rafters. Operations were carried out while trusses were supported on a scaffold and the main deflections were recovered. | |
