Descripción
In recent years, the international trade of fresh fruits and vegetables has increased due to market liberalisation and technical development of agricultural practices, conservation processes and transport facilities. There are a variety of complex environmental, economic and social impacts regarding international trade. The sustainability of this supply chains may be assessed by a number of indicators that reveal the impacts of the diverse stages, that is, from the production site to the final distribution in the Spanish market. The aim of this work is to assess the sustainability of the apple supply chain in Spain making operational the systemic framework and incorporating multivariate statistical tools. The hierarchical structure of the framework was based upon three subsystems: human (social dimension), natural (environmental dimension) and support (economic dimension). Indicators were organized according to Bossel¿s seven basic orientors: existence, effectiveness, freedom of action, security, adaptability, coexistence and psychological needs. Three links of the supply chain were included in the analysis: producer, exporter and importer. The twenty countries more important apple exporters of the world, and other 16 that have exported apples to Spain in the last 10 years, have been selected as the observations set. The selected indicators explained with good agreement the differences in sustainability between different countries and the synthetic indices ranked them all.
