Pepino mosaic virus (PepMV), a member of the genus potexvirus, it is a restrictive factor of the tomato production in Europe and America. It was described by first time in pepino crops (Solanum muricatum) of Peru in 1974. Since first appearing, four genotypes of PepMV have been described: the original Peruvian genotype (LP), the European genotype (EU), and the American genotype US1 and the Chilean genotype (CH2) (95%, 82% and 79% homology in the nucleotide sequences with the isolated original Peruvian, respectively). In Spain it was detected in 1999 causing important epidemics in tomato protected crops, so until 2004 the isolates characterized in the peninsular SE they belonged mainly to the American genotype. In 2004 an increase of the CH2 genotype was detected, this suggests a change in the PepMV population in Spain. A similar population shift from EU to CH2 has occurred over Europe. With the purpose of analyzing this hypothesis, the genetic structure of PepMV population has been characterized in tomato crops of Almería and Murcia during the campaigns of 2007 and 2008. The analysis of nucleotide sequences of the gene that encodes for coat protein (714nt), it indicates that all the isolates characterized they belong to CH2 genotype. Therefore, the CH2 genotype has displaced the European genotype, like it has happened in other European countries, suggesting a competitive advantage. | |
