The turbot is a highly appreciated European aquaculture species, whose production is expected to increase from the currently 9000 Tons up to more than 15000 Tons in 2012. Growth is an economically important trait in this species, as for most domesticated fish species. The search for QTLs is, therefore, of obvious interest. In the present study, five full-sib families obtained from the genetic breeding programs of Stolt Sea Farm SA (SSF) and one from Pescanova SA in Northwestern Spain were used to search for growth-associated QTLs. Overall about 450 individuals were genotyped for near one hundred of homogeneously distributed microsatellites. Phenotypic measures of length and weight of fishes were carried out when they were close to reach 100g. Using the Gridqtl software we have detected seven QTLs for body weight and nine QTls for body length. Four and two of them, respectively, showed a chromosome-wide significance above 1%. | |
