Urban metabolism: Microscale energy simulations in different European cities by using

The use of modern mesoscale meteorological models to calculate the energy balance in urban environments is presented in this contribution. In addition, coupling the mesoscale information as boundary conditions for the CFD microscale applications provides detailed information at urban level of the different energy fluxes and the urban metabolism such as run-off, evapotranspiration and soil moisture fluxes. In this contribution we show the results of running WRF-NOAH-UCM mesoscale meteorological model over Florence (Italy) as part of the activities into the BRIDGE FP7 EU project. In addition, we will show results for Madrid City (Spain) (not part of BRIDGE EU project). The application of the WRF-NOAH-UCM model has been done by using the two-way nesting capabilities over three different domains with 16.2 km, 1.8 km and 0.2 km in these cities. In addition we have implemented into the EULAG CFD model (UCAR, US) the energy balance for urban canopy and vegetation layers with 4 m spatial resolution over these cities. EULAG model is part of the MICROSYS CFD framework developed by UPM. The EULAG model has been implemented using the LES capability and the Eulerian approach. It has been run using the immersed boundary to represent the edifice and the Smagorinsky turbulence model. The EULAG CFD model has been run during 6 minutes with an output frequency of 10 s. The results show a detailed analysis of the urban metabolism and the energy efficiency at buildings, street level and all urban areas
