Introduction: The association between menstrual cycle and body composition in healthy sedentary women has been widely studied (Elliot et al., 2015; Marsh and Jenkins, 2002); however, few studies have evaluated the relation between the different menstrual cycle phases and BC in athletes (Wojtys et al., 2015). Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the influence of the menstrual cycle phases on body composition variables in endurance-trained females in eumenorrheic as well as in oral contraceptive (OC) users. Methods: Thirty endurance-trained females, twenty-one eumenorrheic women and nine oral contraceptive users, have taken part of the study. Body composition variables were measured by DXA (during the first days of the menstrual cycle) and bioimpedance (throughout the different phases of the menstrual cycle). In eumenorrheic women this phases were early follicular phase, mid follicular phase and luteal Phase, whereas in OC users were hormonal phase and non-hormonal phase. Mixed linear model was used to analyze differences among menstrual cycle phases and body composition variables. Results: No significant differences were observed for body composition variables in eumenorrheic women throughout their menstrual phases (p>0.05), whereas the analysis showed that in the OC group, basal metabolism (F8,1=11.387 ; p=0.01), FFM (F8,1=9.816 ; p=0.014) and water (F8,1=10.565 ; p=0.012) were significantly higher in the non-hormonal phase than in the hormonal phase. Conclusion: It seems that the menstrual phase in eumenorrheic endurance trained females do not affect bioimpedance variables, whereas in OC users do. This should be taken into account when studying body composition variables in this population. Perhaps, measurements should be done always in the same phase.
