Abstract
This work considers the chaotic scattering process of an incident He atom on an irregular self-affine surface. In the classical description of this system, the reflected beam depends on (potentially high) nonlinear forces, that are restricted to the relatively narrow interaction zone. It is observed that the dynamics of this system may be either regular, or characterized by chaotic features, including homoclinic structures, invariant non-attranting sets and positive Lyapunov exponents. In this context, the chaotic scattering can be considered as a manifestation of transient chaos.
