By means of computer tools developed to study large non-trivial neuron-like structures (for one dimensional or two dimensional radially symmetric arbitrary receptive fields profiles), it has been possible to perform both the analysis (given a structure, find the overall weighting function) and the synthesis (find a structure that performs a given function). Also, what is most relevant to distributed computation, is the effect of ?holes? or ?local lessions? (scotomas) in different parts of the net. For the cases studied, the effects of lessions are found to depend on their location and affect mostly the quantitative (amplitude) aspects of the weights that the qualitative (shape) ones. The results are reported in this paper, as well as other consequences of the distributed nature of the computation. | |
