Hybrid organic-inorganic polymer nanocomposites that simultaneously incorporate nanofillers with different aspect ratios are of increasing interest for high-performance applications such as the aerospace and automobile industries. In this regard, poly(phenylene sulphide) (PPS) and poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) based nanocomposites reinforced with different contents of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) wrapped in a compatibilizing agent and spherical inorganic fullerene-like tungsten disulfide (IF-WS2) nanopartilces were prepared in a one-step process via melt-extrusion. The morphology of the resulting hybrids was examined by atomic force microscopy (AFC) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Both IF-WS2 and SWCNTs were randomly dispersed within the matrices by shear forces during the melt-blending process, leading to a homogeneous mixing of all the composite components. The ends of some SWCNTs were found to be close to the nanoparticle surfaces, indicating the formation of a unique network that combines both nanofillers. | |
