New LC mixtures aligned with biopolymer layers have been prepared. The influence of the alignment surface on crucial electrooptic issues such as threshold voltage and response time has been studied. A specific topic of interest is the mutual relationship between the helical configuration of DNA and the twisted configurations of chiral materials like cholesteric or smectic antiferroelectric LCs. It is expected that DNA alignment surfaces may promote in-plane helix alignment of the former while improving surface stabilization of the latter in thicker cells. The helix sense must play a decisive role in this stabilization; this issue is currently under study. | |
