Descripción
Tons of materials are handled everyday in a great variety of industries; chemical, pharmaceutical, mining and mineral processing, food, paper, plastic, and more recently in the growing biomass industry. No matter what type of industry is chosen the search for efficiency and safety, in terms of cost control, time savings and safety control in their operations, has been always a high priority. The loss of any of them may bring some consequences for the industry such as loss of competitiveness, due to malfunctioning or bottlenecks, and even more serious ones such as loss of use or even loss of life. Nowadays, special attention is taken by the biomass and biogas industry due to many diverse types of materials are being introduced in processing industries without knowing very well its mechanical, or its explosibility and flammability properties. Some consequences of this are seen in the most recent accidents of fires and explosions as well as in the technical reports about malfunctioning of facilities and collapse of structures. The storage and transport of bioresources will demand every time larger facilities and more specific equipment, due to the foreseen increasing demand. If current designs of storage systems and transport equipment are still used for these new products then the whole supply could be at great risk. Nowadays, there is a considerable need for research on these materials as well as on other particulate or granular materials handled in other industries. The recent progresses and advances should be introduced in continuing education courses to provide a solid background in this field to the professionals that are being demanded by industry. In the frame of the ANQUE-ICCE-BIOTEC 2014 ?Science the key for a better life?, which will be held from 1st to 4th July 2014 in Madrid (Spain), the second edition of the Symposium HANHAZ2014 has been organized. This Symposium receives the support from the Working Party on Mechanics of Particulate Solids (WPMPS) of the European Federation of Chemical Engineering (EFCE).
