Abstract
Different authors have previously proposed several schemes for increasing the efficiency of a solar photovoltaic cell, using either multijunction solar cells made by stacking several elemental cells with different band-gap widths allowing an optimized light absorption of different wavelength in each elemental cell (Green, 2006), or by indirect conversion through thermal energy (Coutts, 1999) using emitters with radiant spectra concentrated in a narrow energy range adapted to the bandgap of a normal photovoltaic element. In the development of higher energetic efficiency in photovoltaic (PV) cells, a new idea was proposed by Wolf in 1960 to achieve higher photovoltaic (PV) efficiency, the so-called defect PV or impurity PV device, where a defect level serves as intermediate step for the electronic transition and a voltage corresponding to the full bandgap is obtained while using photons of lower than bandgap energy.
