In all phase-sensitive light-matter interactions, controlling the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) of the few-cycle pulses in the focal volume where the interaction takes place is as important as controlling the CEP of the laser source itself. Experimentally, the relevance of accurately tracing the complicated CEP spatial map in the focal region has been underlined in recent measurements based on the CEP-sensitivity of the backscattered photoelectrons from a gold nanotip scanning the focal volume. These measurements support our theoretical predictions, confirming definitely large deviations from Gouy?s phase shift, and emphasize the need for the practical characterization of the CEP map in setups involving focusing of ultrashort pulses prior to performing light-matter interaction experiments. | |
