Co-occurrence of nanoparticles and pesticides is common in agricultural soils. The use of pesticides can have adverse effects on non-target organisms despite their restricted species selectivity. Chlorpyrifos is an organophosphate pesticide extensively used in agriculture and highly toxic for human health. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (nZnO) have one of the highest production volumes of nanoparticles. Therefore, the evaluation of their interactive toxic effects may comprise a useful tool for the estimation of the environmental hazard of these chemicals. Earthworm species are habitually used as a test organism because they are maintained efficiently in the laboratory, are sensitive indicators of soil quality and are considered sensitive to a broad spectrum of toxicants. Harmful effects of chlorpyrifos and nZnO on earthworms have been reported at relevant environmental concentrations and have resulted in concern about potential and long-term effects. | |
