An understanding of the socioeconomic features and mobility needs of different spatial zones in a city is essential for developing transport management strategies. However, a zone-per-zone characterization could be complex and may not provide a general overview. In this paper, we analyze 48 spatial zones in the city of Vitoria (Spain) through variables from the Household Mobility Survey (2014). In order to simplify the characterization of the zones, we classify them into different typologies (clusters). The main variables used in the cluster analysis are: percentage of trips with origin and destination in the same zone (intra-zonal), commuting trips attracted and modal share of the trips generated in each zone. We use a hierarchical method to set the appropriate number of clusters, and then a non-hierarchical method and an ANOVA test to ensure the stability and consistency of the resulting classification. | |
