Descripción
This Special Session builds on the work of a large group of researchers focused on developing Ontologies for Robotics and Automation, sponsored by IEEE RAS/SC - Standing Committee for Standards. The IEEE projects are: P1872.1 and P1872.2, Robot Task Representation (RTR), and the Standard for Autonomous Robotics (AuR) Ontology. Robots are required to behave autonomously in open-ended environments and in close interaction with humans and other robots. New requirements posed by domains and stakeholders, demand novel knowledge-intensive approaches to drive both the engineering and run-time operation of autonomous robots. Improving both engineering knowledge about robots and robot?s runtime knowledge is a main topic to be addressed. Model-driven engineering and runtime hybrid robot-human team collaboration tend to require the existence of shared ontologies. Ontology-based knowledge engineering approaches are progressively being applied in autonomous robotic systems. Ontologies sustain not only a common understanding of the domain for humans ?necessary for engineering? but also for human-robot and robot-robot interaction, to represent both the knowledge a robot needs to perform its tasks in an autonomous way or to interact with humans. This Special Session will bring together practitioners who consider ontologies to represent knowledge, requirements, reasoning, and engineering processes in robotics and autonomous systems. The papers address several application scenarios of ontologies to robotics, i.e., robotic surgery, industrial robots, manipulation tasks, robot tasks and actions sequencing, to design robot structures, to model robot hardware, to model human behaviour and activities for robot interaction, robot sensing, and to model robot services. Sharing ontological-driven approaches and solutions will point out key elements to integrate into current initiatives to standardise ontologies for robotics and autonomous systems. The Special Session will moreover benefit a wide audience attending the main track at IROS 2018. Participants from industrial and academic organisations, interested on how ontologies can be used in robotics and automation. Early career researchers such as graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, who will learn from new approaches to apply in their research. Robotics designers and engineers new to the field addressed by the Special Session, who could use ontologies at design time.
