This paper presents a microwave comparator, useful to detect differences between a reference sample (REF) and a sample under test (SUT), based on a pair of symmetric microstrip lines loaded with dumbbell defect ground structures (DB-DGS). Comparison is based on loading one of the DB-DGS with the REF sample and the other one with the SUT. If the samples are identical, symmetry is preserved and the cross-mode transmission coefficient is ideally null (in practice extremely small). However, a small symmetry perturbation (caused by differences between the REF and SUT samples) generates mode conversion, thereby increasing the magnitude of the cross-mode transmission coefficient, the output variable. The validation of the comparator is carried out by considering dielectric slabs with generated defects. The sensitivity of the proposed device to detect tiny differences between the REF sample and the SUT is pointed out. | |
