Data is carried as light pulses in optical communication systems. A drastic reduction in the communication speed rate comes from the need to perform the processing of the signal electronically. It is therefore very interesting to try to find new materials and optical structures that can perform all processing optically, bypassing the need for the optical/electronic interface. In order to progress towards the all-optical processing, in the past years there have been a lot of effort in the study of the interaction of light pulses with grating defects, and it has been found (both theoretically and numerically) that it is possible to trap and release light pulses at grating defects. The purpose of this proposed research effort is to study the interaction of light with a new type of narrow defect, computing the transmission and reflection coefficients for different defect shapes and optimizing its light pulse control characteristics. | |
