lighting and access from an interior court across the perimeter corridors opened to the mentioned court¿. In Madrid, are popularly known as "corralas", and represent the bulk of the residential building in the more depressed neighbourhoods during the 19th century. Nevertheless, it has become a widely used architectural model and its origins can be found in the Roman courtyard house and in the Muslim parapet wall constructions. Currently, there are over 600 corridor houses in Madrid, of which almost 200 are located in the Embajadores district, and most of them presenting a deplorable maintenance and living condition (except those which have been rehabilitated). Almost all the corridor houses founded before the 20th century are built with timbered structures, showing clear signs of instability and lack of resistance due to dampness and xylophagous insect attacks. Therefore, there is a tendency to perform an interior demolition maintaining the façade in order to reconstruct the building. Such intervention often implies a high risk of collapse, as well as the destabilization of nearby buildings. This work proposes a system for recovering the existing structure by strengthening the wooden floors and the timber walls. | |
