Descripción
The aim of this work is to estimate the potential lignocellulosic biomass production of the Agrarian Counties of Spain from dedicated energy crops in marginalized agricultural land. Both rainfed and irrigated agricultural fallow and set aside land are considered as marginalized land potentially available for energy crops. Three energy crops are suggested as `type species¿ for energy purposes: cardoon (Cynara cardunculus L.) as herbaceous crop for rainfed land, poplar (Populus sp.) as short rotation crop for irrigated land and dedicated varieties of cereals for agricultural land under harsh climatic conditions. One or two energy crops are selected for every Spanish municipality (NUTS-4) according to preliminary considerations and agro-climatic constraints. Energy crop yields are estimated by means of prediction models based on different indexes and climatic parameters. Finally, GIS tools are used to overlap compiled data and to apply yield prediction models in order to assess biomass potential and to aggregate results at a county scale. Potential distribution constraints suggested cardoon as adequate energy crop for 3,082 NUTS-4 (1,535,944 ha) and winter cereals for 3,545 NUTS-4 (2,039,189 ha). Poplar crop in rainfed and irrigated conditions was assigned to 1,184 NUTS-4 (44,943 ha) and 3,740 NUTS-4 (345,634 ha), respectively. Yearly biomass potential production sum up to 41,219,381 oven dry tonne (odt/year) which translated into bioenergy terms is equivalent to 16,127,479 toe.
